This is the story of how Ugarapul Country was created by Karbul, the Rainbow Serpent, and Goupong, the Green Tree Frog.
Long ago, when the nights were dark and the only light came from the stars above and the campfires below, sat Moolpajo, King of the Ugarapul people. He would sit by the fire and share the story of how Ugarapul Country and its people came to be.
It is a story of when Baiame called upon Karbul, the Rainbow Serpent, and Goupong, the Green Tree Frog, and told them to create Ugarapul Country for the Ugarapul people.
When Karbul and Goupong heard Baiame's words, they set off on their journey. Upon arriving, Karbul said to Goupong, "You go and form the hills, and I will create the valleys, rivers, creeks, lagoons, and lakes. When your work is done, this Country will be ready."
As Goupong travelled across the land, he began to lose sight of Karbul. To find him again, he leapt high into the air, searching for the Rainbow Serpent below. With every jump, he formed peaks and mountain tops. Before long, the mountain ranges stretched across Ugarapul Country.
Meanwhile, Karbul carved the valleys and shaped the rivers, lakes, creeks, and lagoons. When his work was complete, he looked across the Country and saw the mountains Goupong had created. Together, they had prepared the land for the Ugarapul people.
Karbul eventually found Goupong resting after all his hard work. He knew this was where Goupong would remain, watching over his Country and his people. To protect them for all time, Karbul wrapped himself around Goupong.
Today, it is said that you can still see Goupong resting and watching over his Country. If you stand at the Limestone Ridges and look towards the mountain known to the Ugarapul people as Boorrumpah (more commonly known as Mt Flinders) you can see his shape upon the land.
Boorrumpah remains a place of great significance and is the home of Ugarapul Men's Business.
